Project Overview Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands Credit Union Development
Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening

Purpose:

  • To expand the outreach of microfinance services and products to people denied such access.
  • To develop individual and community skills and ability to finance and manage their own micro enterprise activity.

Goals:

  • To merge smaller credit unions into larger more sustainable credit unions and to link existing Savings Clubs into newly created regional credit unions.
  • Develop New Microfinance Rural Resource Centres (MRRCs) to ensure that all provinces have access.

Project Objectives:

  • Assist the formation and operation of regional credit unions and link them with Savings Clubs and MRRCs
  • Encourage strengthening of CU governance

CUFA has been working in the Solomon Islands since the early 1990’s. As a part of our strategies to achieve the goals and objectives of this project CUFA will provide project funding and in-house project management including monitoring. CUFA’s strategies also include engaging with the Solomon Islands Credit Union League as in-country coordinators, and to engage local village committees to perform all tasks relating to forming and maintaining MRRC’s and Savings Clubs and newly formed regional credit unions. The project strategies also include promoting improved credit union governance.
