The Cambodian Credit Union Education Program, 10 - 17 May 2008

Summary:

CUFA conducted its first an education program in Cambodia from May 10-17 2008.

The program provided insight into the challenges and major issues impacting the financial cooperatives in Cambodia. The program started with a cultural briefing on arrival in Cambodia; the history of the Cambodian financial cooperatives in Cambodia and an overview of the issues of trust that still haunt many Cambodians and their institutions today. CUFA’s program took participants through a variety of Cambodian financial institutions and cooperatives enabling the CEO’s and Directors to gain a sense how credit unions are evolving in Cambodia.

Partnering agency representatives from local financial cooperatives will assist CUFA in providing an outline to Australian CEO’s and Directors in order for them to gain an understanding of the challenges faced amongst the emerging credit union movement in Cambodia. Presentations by CUFA’s partnering agencies in Cambodia will include the Cambodian Community Finance Institution Network (CCFiN), the Cambodian Community Savings Federation (CCSF) on the loan pool, and information about the project relationship with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA).
