094/2007 Appointment to the Solomon Islands Credit Union League

NSW Teachers Credit Union (NSWTCU) are generously sponsoring David Loring to sit on the Solomon Islands Credit Union League (SICUL) Board. During the recent review of CUFA’s project in the Solomon Islands it was found there was a need to build capacity and governance skills of the SICUL Board.

It was agreed at a special SICUL Board meeting that CUFA would source a representative and sponsorship of an Australian Credit Union representative to sit on their board.

NSWTCU has been a proud supporter of the International Credit Union movement for many years. Ken Miller, General Manager from 1970 to 1987 served on the WOCCU Board and then became President. His involvement in WOCCU was the catalyst for NSWTCU’s long-standing financial and humanitarian support. The current Board of Directors were proud to continue their involvement with financial support which enables one of their management team to assist in the development of the Solomon Islands credit union movement.

David commenced work in credit unions in 1969 as a voluntary secretary of Ibis Credit Union. He then spent 3 years in Paua New Guinea establishing a number of employer group credit unions in Port Moresby and was instrumental into combining most of these groups into one mutual credit union to maximise their resources.

In David’s 19½ years at NSWTCU he has seen the Credit Union’s assets grow from $200 million to $1.85 billion and membership from 55,000 to 142,000. He participated in the launch of many new service initiatives such as the provision of specialist products for distinct market segments. David’s experience includes time spent as a Field Officer, managing a team of Business Development Officers and handling staff recruitment and training.

He also has considerable experience with third party products and providers. Representatives from the SICUL Board said ‘this is the person that the Solomon Islands Credit Union movement has been trying to find for many years…David’s experience will surely assist in the new steps that SICUL would like to undertake especially in mergers, amalgamations, products & services to the credit union population.’

David will be attending his first SICUL Board meeting on the 23rd of April as a part of the WOCCU and CUFA mission to the Solomon Islands.
